About Ready, Set, Roll!

Ready, Set, Roll! was first introduced in 2019, but has since been updated and is ready for 2025. In this challenge, the students are asked to create a prototype that will roll down an inclined plane and stop at different designated targets. The students collaborate to design, create, test, improve, and retest their prototype. They use everyday objects brought from home as models and learn about the history of the wheel and how it works.

The Materials

Teacher’s Guide: The TG is a step-by-step guide designed to lead students toward the ultimate goal: building a rolling prototype. It includes a variety of activities that reinforce key science and technology concepts while fostering essential skills such as exploration strategies, data recording and interpretation, and effective communication.

Intensive ESL Extras:  Intensive ESL Extras, found in Appendix 2, offers activity suggestions to help support ESL students. While completing the various tasks of the LES with their peers, students will have many opportunities to practice interacting orally in English. The teacher can use the generic evaluation tool provided in this section. Students will also have the opportunity to practice writing texts in some of the tasks. Planning tools for the students and a generic evaluation tool for the teacher  are also included in this section.

Rules: This document describes the main rules of the challenge.

Student Handbook:  This is where students will record information acquired during the tasks and take notes to accomplish their goal of building a rolling prototype.

Slideshows: There are three slideshows which will give students context and further explanations for the challenge. Setting the Stage, Activity 1, Activity 2.

Video Capsules: Two video capsules have been created for students but have not been translated into English. These capsules are optional for learners of English.

Past Junior Tech Challenges: If you’d like to try a different challenge, visit Réseau technoscience’s Google Drive for a complete list of all past, French and English challenges!
