Teaching With Heart

This year at SPEAQ, IntenSIG embraced the convention theme, For the Love of Learning. We selected our most cherished and motivating classroom activities to share with participants, aiming to spread our passion and ignite the same excitement among teachers.

Here’s a quick recap of what we presented:

TITLE:

Life Skills Cards

GOAL:

To teach students practical life skills in a fun way.

HOW WE DID IT

We began the session with Sheena’s Life Skills Cards. These weekly cards, beloved by her students, offer practical tips on everything from learning common household chores, to practicing polite communication skills. Simple, effective, and essential, these cards are a surefire way to enhance any classroom experience!

TITLE

Daily 5 My Way

PEDAGOGICAL INTENTION

To engage students with a structure that will help them practice English competencies while developing their autonomy and confidence.

HOW WE DID IT

Carolann introduced the Daily 5 stations that her students eagerly anticipate every day! These structured stations empower students by offering them choice and opportunities to practice English competencies introduced in class. The tasks in the stations help strengthen connections with the teacher, reduce anxiety about producing and understanding messages, and motivate students to keep practicing their reading, writing, and speaking skills in English!

TITLE

Tech Tips for Non-Experts

PEDAGOGICAL INTENTION

To provide teachers with tech tools that will help motivate their students to help them develop specific skills and ESL competencies.

HOW WE DID IT

Claudia and Gabriel showcased tech tools designed to provide students with a more enriched and personalized learning experience. These digital tools aimed to cultivate essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, benefiting both educators and learners.

TITLE

Making Your Classroom a Better Place with SEL (Social Emotional Learning)

PEDAGOGICAL INTENTION

To introduce students to SEL competencies, fostering a more supportive, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment.

HOW WE DID IT

Christine and Kellylee demonstrated how the five Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies can be seamlessly integrated into ESL teaching. By emphasizing key skills such as active listening, teamwork, and a growth mindset, students not only enhance their English proficiency but also build confidence while practicing kindness and respect.

The activities were a hit with participants, leaving them eager for more! To have access to all the documents presented at our workshop, visit the *SPEAQ website.

Each year, Intensig presents at the SPEAQ convention, and hosts a full-day workshop as part of the annual Spring Gig event in May. This year, we are delighted to have been invited by CSSMI for the Spring Gig 2025 event. All Intensive ESL teachers and consultants are welcome to join us. Stay tuned for the final date, which will be announced in SPEAQ News, the monthly ESL Newsletter, and the various ESL Facebook pages. We look forward to seeing you there!
