1749, Pehr Kalm, Swedish naturalist:

“Onions are widely used […], in Canada, as is leek. People also grow several types of squash, melons, lettuce, wild endive or chicory […], several species of peas and beans, carrot and cucumber. Red beets, horseradish and ordinary radish, thyme and marjoram grow marvellously, as do turnips, which are consumed in large quantities, especially in the winter. Parsnips are sometimes seen on the table, but it is not common. Few people know the potato […].”
