1749, Pehr Kalm, Swedish naturalist:

“(Montréal) has several churches, of which I will only mention those of the religious order of St. Sulpice, the Jesuits, the Franciscan monks, the convent and the hospital. (The St. Sulpice church), with the richness of its ornaments, both inside and outside, is by far the most beautiful church, not only in the town, but in all of Canada.”
