Most merchants live in the lower town, where homes are packed one against the other. The streets are narrow, rough and almost always wet. There is a church and a small market in this part of the city.

The upper town is inhabited by people of quality, officials, negotiators, and others. It is home to the city’s main buildings […] It offers a splendid view of the city and the St. Lawrence River.”
